e.e. cummings and valentine's day

sometimes valentine's day sucks.

you're alone (just you and your cats), you're single, your husband forgot you or you still haven't even found a relationship worth mentioning. sometimes valentine's day is amazing. someone you didn't even know admired you surprises you, your husband of fifty years writes you a love letter, or your best friend is taking you out for girlfriend drinks. valentine's is after all just a day, but no matter how you feel about it, i think it's worth taking a moment to think about love. because love is pretty damn great.

this summer i came across the following poem. it's by my pal, the fearless e.e. cummings and all around ruler breaker, especially the rules of grammar. i fell in love with his work as an adolescent because i wanted to be a ruler breaker, and because i really hated grammar. reading his words again was kind of like going home after a very long journey. this poem especially.to all of you on valentine's day, i wanted to share one of my favorite works by e.e. cummings because this is the love and life i choose to believe in. life really is like a tree that grows so high we can't even imagine all it's capable of. and we really do carry the hearts of those we love with us everywhere. our family, our dearest friends, those we've lost, our partner in life and those of you still looking for your partner, i think we even carry the love we have yet to encounter. the spark of it is there.

so happy heart day from me to you!

[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]by e. e. cummings

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart) i am never without it(anywhere i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done by only me is your doing,my darling)i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

to accompany his beautiful words some of my favorite moments of people in love.love,tori(p.s. notice all the lower case, i'm being a ruler breaker too today)
